BEAR Labs Making a Difference: Neighborhood Clean-Up in Lancaster

What's up, BEAR Labs family!

We've got some exciting news to share from our very own backyard here in Lancaster, CA. Our team recently embarked on a mission that took us outside the lab and into our local community, armed with garbage bags, gloves, reacher-grabber tools and a whole lot of enthusiasm!

It was an extraordinary day filled with camaraderie and a shared love for our neighborhood. We were out there, picking up everything from candy wrappers to discarded truck tires, putting in sweat and smiles for a cause close to our hearts. By the end of the day, we had collected a staggering 105 pounds of trash, a significant step towards a cleaner, healthier Lancaster.

This initiative was inspired by our participation in a similar effort with Catalyst Cares, the community enrichment division of Catalyst, a group of successful cannabis dispensaries in California. The experience was so uplifting and meaningful that we decided to bring the spirit of service back to our own community. But this is just the beginning. We aim to hold these clean-up events several times a year, because we believe in giving back to our community and preserving the environment for future generations. Our commitment goes beyond our state-of-the-art facility and focus on creating high-quality products; it extends to our neighborhood, our home.

We want to take this opportunity to thank every member of the BEAR Labs team who participated in this effort. It was a day that truly embodied the spirit of BEAR Labs - friendly, energetic, and community-focused. How To Take A Dab: Tools and Temps

There are many ways to consume cannabis products these days. One of the most popular is dabbing. The term "Dabbing" comes from the term for a hit of cannabis concentrates, known as a "Dab". These products are testing typically between 70%-99% Total Active Cannabinoids so vaping this stuff isn't for the faint of heart because quite literally, "A dab will do ya".

Popular Temps For Dabbing:

You can use either a temperature gun or a Dab Rite to determine the temperature of your dab if you are using a dab rig or traditional bong.

-For a very terpy flavor and a light vapor, dab at a lower temp. Somewhere between 300F-400F.

-For a slightly less terpy flavor and a good amount of vapor, dab at a mid-range temp. Somewhere between 400F-500F

-For a less terpy flavor but a lot of vapor, dab at a higher temp. Somewhere between 500F-700F

Popular Methods For Dabbing:

-Dab Rigs

-Traditional Bong

-Electronic Vaporizes (PuffCo, Carta)

-Nectar Collector

-Placing It On Top Of A Bowl Of Flower

-Rolling It Inside Of A Joint or Blunt

Dabbing Process For Electronic Devices:

Step 1- Use a dab tool to scrape up and prepare your dab (Typically recommend somewhere between .025g to .1g.)

Step 2- If using an electronic dab rig, place your dab into the bowl and commence the heating process.

Step 3- Cap the bowl and wait for desired heat setting to be reached.

Step 4- Pull on mouthpiece slowly and inhale your desired amount of vapor.

Step 5- Use a q-tip to clean the bowl after you are done

Dabbing Process For Dab Rigs/Traditional Bongs:

Step 1- Use a dab tool to scrape up and prepare your dab (Typically recommend somewhere between .025g to .1g.)

Step 2- Use a torch to heat up nail, banger, trough or terp slurper until it is red hot.

Step 3- Depending on the nail (banger, trough or terp slurper) age and quality, let it cool down for anywhere between 60 seconds to 120 seconds. It should feel warm when hovering your hand over the nail. Should not feel HOT.

Step 4- Once cooled down enough, drop your dab into the nail and place a cap on top of it to slightly restrict airflow.

Step 5- Slowly pull on mouthpiece and inhale your desired amount of vapor.

Step 6- Use a q-tip to clean the bowl after you are done

Dabbing Process For Nectar Collector:

Step 1- Heat up stainless steel tip of the Nectar Collector

Step 2- Point at and touch the concentrate with the stainless steel tip of the Nectar Collector.

Step 3- Slowly pull through the mouthpiece and inhale desired amount of vapor.

Dabbing Process For Placing A Dab On A Bowl Of Flower:

Step 1- Pack a bowl of some dank flower in your pipe or bong.

Step 2- Separate a dab of concentrate and place it on top of the bowl of flower.

Step 3- Use a lighter to melt down the oil and eventually begin to burn the flower. This causes the oil vapor to mix with the flower smoke which creates a wonderful mix of both worlds.

Step 4- Dump your spent bowl out and reset.

Dabbing Process For Rolling Dab Inside Of A Joint Or Blunt (Known As A Donut Hole):

Step 1- Roll up a blunt or a joint with some dank flower but seal it up yet.

Step 2- Take concentrate and roll it into a slug shape if its rollable. If not rollable, you'll be dropping it directly into the flower from the concentrate jar.

Step 3- Once concentrate is placed into the roll, seal it up and get ready for lift off.

Step 4- Light up your roll and enjoy!

Step 5- Don't litter and be sure to recycle that roach!

Cannabis Plant Processing Types

There are many ways that the active ingredients in the cannabis plant can be stripped or extracted from the plant it self, leaving plant material behind. The desired end product will determine which type of process is right for the job. In this article, we will cover the big differences between each of the processes listed below.

Processing Types:

-Ethanol Extraction

-Ice/Water Extraction

-Light Hydrocarbon Extraction

-Mechanical Separation

-CO2 Extraction

Ethanol Extraction:

Ethanol extraction is likely the most efficient and cost effective solution for extracting the active ingredient, THC, from the cannabis plan. It's a rough and broad extraction process that almost always results in a crude oil product which needs to be further refined into a smokeable product. In this process, cannabis is washed in a big industrial washing machine type system. The basket of the machine is filled with cannabis and then freezing cold Ethanol (-40C) is poured into the machine. The Ethanol needs to be this cold so that the solvent only extracts the desirable THC molecules and not the undesirable fats, waxes, lipids and chlorophyl. The operator will then start the machine which will spin at 1500 RPM for about 10 minutes. After this step, the oil and Ethanol mix is put through another machine which recovers back the majority of the alcohol used so that it may be reused again. The crude oil thats left over can then be further refined into whats known as Distillate (THC Oil testing above 90% purity) or put into edibles.

Ice/Water Extraction:

Ice Water Extract and Live Rosin are one of the most valuable and sought after products in todays smokeable cannabis market. In this process, fresh cannabis plant is mixed with ice and water, then filtered through a set of different micron screens. These screens are responsible for capturing the trichome heads that have been frozen. Once these trichomes are collected and majority of the water drained from them, the hash is placed onto parchment paper in a stainless steel tray. This tray then heads into a freeze dryer and the remainder of the moisture is dried out of the product. This end product is then sieved and smoked as water hash or it can be further refined into Rosin using Mechanical Separation which we will be covering later in this post.

Light Hydrocarbon Extraction:

Light Hydrocarbon Extraction is typically the most efficient form of extractions when it comes to smokeable products. Lab grade Butane, Isobutane, Propane or a combination of any of the three is used in a closed-loop extraction system. The first step in the process is to break down the material (either dry cannabis or fresh frozen cannabis) and pack it into the material column of the closed loop system. Once the operator is ready to begin the run, they will let the -40C solvent flow over the material and soak it for a period of time (usually 5 minutes). After the soak is complete, the operator will then open the necessary valves to allow the oil/solvent mixture flow to the collection column. While it's flowing from the material column to the collection column, the oil/solvent mixture passes through a series of media and paper filters which helps remove any potential impurities. Now that the oil/solvent mixture is in the collection column, heat is added to the column. This makes the solvent in the collection column begin to boil and evaporate from a liquid to a gas. The warm gas is then collected back into the cold solvent storage tank and is turned back into a liquid to be reused again. When majority of the solvent is out of the collection column and back into the solvent storage tank, the oil is ready to be poured out of the machine. Depending on the desired end consistency, the operator will either pour the oil onto a parchment sheet, pyrex dish or diamond miner.

Mechanical Separation:

Mechanical Separation is one of the newer forms of extraction/separation in the industry. This process is done by using high pressure and heat to break the outer layer of the trichome and release the THC thats inside of it. The process of Mechanical Separation is used mainly to refine ice water hash or dry flower into a type of concentrate called Rosin. The operator will take dry hash or dry flower and place it into a bag thats made out of nylon screen. When pressure and heat are applied to this bag of hash or flower, the THC resin flows out and is collected either in a jar or on a parchment paper. Currently Rosin is one of the higher end and most sought after products on the market.

CO2 Extraction:

CO2 Extraction is another form of processing that is typically only used to make crude THC oil. Sometimes CO2 extraction can also be tailored to separating terpenes and other compounds other than THC out of the product.
